Dice Digest — May 2024 (#22)

I used to put together Dice Digests with a selection of new dice releases a few years ago but stopped doing them in 2021 because of the amount of time and effort involved. However, I’m thinking of bringing them back and so let’s kick it off in 2024 with dice news and new releases from the past months or two.

Disclaimer:
This newsletter is impartial, editorial content and is not aimed at commercially advertising products. I don’t receive any payment or free products for any content in this newsletter. Products mentioned are things I personally find interesting and would like to keep the dice community informed about. There are certain dice brands I will not include because of their unsavoury business practices and other known issues.

Dice Spotlight

A recently finished reink of one of the Udixi Crackle sets. These originally come inked in black, which made them not as legible as they could be and also gave them a dark and unispiring vibe. I dareay this reink increases readability and also makes them look a lot classier.

New Releases

New from Chessex

Lab Dice wave 8 has just been announced. Chessex started revealing the designs in their weekly Scoop newsletter in April 2024, starting with Nebula Fluorite, followed by Gemini Gellow-Red, Gemini Red-Steel. In May they unveiled Marble Calcite, Borealis Cosmos and Festive Hydrangea.

The street date for when we should see these appear in retail stores has been announced as June 26, 2024.

In the latest Chessex Scoop newsletter it was also announced that they are adding more colourways to their new overiszed countdown d20s. Surprisingly, they are bringing back a few colours that were discontinued years ago (Vortex Malachite, Vortex Dandelion, Vortex Pink and Vortex Red w/yellow) and Vortex Ice Blue that they produced as a test set in 2018 that never went into full production.

New from Chessex are also four additions to the Chessex Opaque lineup out of the Danish urea factory. With a street date of May 01, 2024, they added the following four new pastel colours:

Opaque Pastel BlueCHX 25466
Opaque Pastel GreenCHX 25465
Opaque Pastel PinkCHX 25464
Opaque Pastel YellowCHX 25462

New from Critical Role

For those following the D&D 5e actual-play live stream Critical Role, a new Bells Hells dice set was released in April. This is the set for Robbie Daymond’s character Dorian Storm, an Air Genasi bard.

As usual for the Critical Role character polysets, the d20 has a character icon in place of the 20, in this case a lute.

This marks the 8th set in the Bells Hells polyset line.

New from Dice Envy

Dice Envy released a new winter-themed set in April, called Snow Mercy. The set comes with their rounded infinity d4 as well as a regular pyramic shaped d4, an extra d6 with a Dice Envy logo and an extra oversized d20.

New from Die Hard Dice

In April, two new announcements were made of new releases. First of all, a set called Nebula Rain – dice with an iridescent metallic blue-purple shimmer and a raindrop-like effect on the surface.

New critlings were also added to the shop, including two-colour swirl designs and some with glitter.

New from Dispel Dice

Dispel Dice has added more Baldur’s Gate 3 inspired dice sets to their Camp Companions line. You can now pre-ordere the Raphael inspired set Devil You Know and one modeled after Shadowheart, named Daughter of Darkness.

New from Haxtec

Two new sharp-edged designs from Haxtec with a field of flowers inside, bedded on a dark resin layer. These sets come with a shard shaped d4.

New from HD Dice

More pattern dice from HD in additional ink colours were recently added to their repertoire. These are named Magic Flame on their website.

New from Heartstring Dice

Heartstring Dice (or HS Dice) is the generic dice company out of China at the moment with the most prolific release strategy. Below are their latest additions – a variety of glass, gemstone, wooden, resin and acrylic dice.

New from Udixi

Also fairly prolific, Udixi added a whole slew of new products in the past month or two, which includes not just acrylic, resin, wooden and metal dice, but also flannel drawstring bags and rolling trays.

New from Sirius Dice

A few new products from Sirius Dice that are exclusive to them – three new faux-stone sets (I believe these are actually resin made to look like stone) and a mermaid-themed d20 necklace.

New Sharp-Edged Designs

These are sharp-edged dice from mass-production resin crafters in China that I believe to be fairly new. This list is by no means exhaustive and just a selection of what I personally find interesting. These dice can be bought from a multitude of dice retailers as well as Aliexpress. The first 10 designs are from Mini Planet Dice.

Kickstarters

The listed Kickstarters aren’t automatically recommended or endorsed by me, nor does it mean they are trustworthy and legit. I try my best not to list anything that looks dodgy or that I couldn’t in good conscience recommend, but it’s always possible that a project looks great on paper but ends up not delivering what it promises. Ultimately it’s at everyone’s own discretion whether they want to back any of these Kickstarters or not.
