Chessex Lab Dice 2019

Every year dice collectors and enthusiasts get excited about new releases, and Chessex dice are certainly no exception. At GAMA Expo in March 2019, we got the very first glimpse of new dice that Chessex was planning to release this year. Back then, they were called “From the Lab”, which later evolved to just “Lab Dice”.

Following the increasingly popular trend in the dice industry to release certain sets only in limited numbers, Chessex chose to expand their market testing practices from not just selling small numbers of test sets at select conventions, but actually bringing these limited run sets to retailers to sell to the wider public. Popularity with customers would then become the deciding factor for which designs would go into regular and continuous production and which would be shelved.

In mid June 2019, Chessex informed retailers that the first release of Lab Dice would be in early July, with the subsequent release of Lab Dice wave 2 in mid September. Wave 3 was introduced at the 2019 gaming convention Spiel in Germany in late October, seeing a wider release for the rest of the world later that year.

Let’s look at the Lab Dice of 2019 a little more closely.

Lab Dice Wave 1

Wave 1 consisted of six different designs, focusing largely on Chessex’s Festive line, with the addition of one new Nebula and one new Lustrous design. Following their first experiment with glowing snowflake-like pigments in the Chessex Luminary Sky release from late 2018, further designs were introduced that have the same glowing particles inside the dice that are UV reactive and glow in the dark (this was dubbed the Luminary effect). Like other Festive dice, some of them didn’t have the Luminary particles but were UV without a lasting glow.

All the Lab Dice sets came in the regular rectangular plastic boxes, with the lid being blue instead of the regular black. The paper inlays are three-fold, with an Erlenmeyer flask icon to indicate the experimental nature of these sets.

The wave 1 sets were released as 7-die polysets in the blue-lidded rectangular boxes. Pips for all six colours in 16mm size were made and sold in mixed Lab Dice pipped assortment bags. Pipped 12mm, 16mm and 30mm dice are available for Nebula Nocturnal with a darker blue ink from their full release production run.

Lab Dice Wave 1 hit stores in June ’19, and it quickly became apparent that Nebula Nocturnal would be a huge hit. Preorders of these sold out very quickly, and it has become near-impossible to find them for sale since. The great variation in amount of color swirls and purple hue (ranging from reddish-plum to more blue indigo shades) make them fun to collect and even to curate differently colored sets, and the Luminary glow-in-the-dark effect is stunning. It’s no surprise that collectors and dice lovers around the world were immediately drawn to them.

Chessex realised this very quickly and communicated that Nebula Nocturnal would be one of the Lab Dice that would make it to full release. It was confirmed in mid 2020 that Nebula Oceanic, Red and Wisteria would also be seeing a full production run, and Nebula Spring would be remade as amended version with more orange in it.

Lab Dice Wave 2

Wave 2 was a mix of eight designs, four of which were from the Nebula line, next to new designs to expand the Lustrous, Leaf and Vortex lines. The Luminary particles made a comeback, as well as many new swirly patterns in different colors and styles.

Interestingly, the Vortex Snow dice are a throwback to the very popular Ice Cream line by Crystal Caste that came in blue, green, pink, orange, purple and yellow, and is long out of print.

Wave 2 of the Lab Dice were offered for sale by retailers across the world in September. Most popular in the second wave was Nebula Oceanic, which was not a big surprise, following the success of Nebula Nocturnal. Nebula Wisteria followed a close second.

Lab Dice Wave 3

Wave 3 was solely a Gemini release, with six new Gemini lines being launched. In addition to the classic two-color Gemini mix, Chessex introduced design elements new to the Gemini lines, such as Luminary particles in part of the dice, and a “gel” look with half-translucent material and Luminary particles inside. The popularity among collectors of the Gemini Translucent Green-Teal line seems to have inspired Chessex to bring back the translucent Gemini design in another color combination.

Initial reception of Wave 3 dice in the dice community seems to have been positive, but actual sales will tell which lines eventually get produced later on.

No pips were made for wave 3 Lab Dice with the exception of Gemini Copper-Turquoise 16mm pips which have occasionally appeared in Pound o’ Dice bags.

Lab Dice Wave 4, 5, 6, …?

The only mention of further Lab Dice waves at the time was wave 4, which was cited in a live stream video by GTS Distribution where Chessex owner Donald Reents stated that wave 4 dice will be packaged in test tubes instead of the usual rectangular boxes, to go with the “lab” theme. It took until mid 2020 for Chessex to actually release Wave 4, which was a mix of different designs that you can read up on in another blog entry.
